Pre-season Round-up

Crewe FC pull-out means pre-season schedule now complete

Frustratingly we ‘ve just learned that we will miss out on hosting our final pre-season warm-up fixture, as our scheduled opponents Crewe FC have pulled out of the fixture we were due to host at Buckmaster Avenue tomorrow afternoon.

This means that the next time the first team will be in action will be when we journey south to Sutton Coldfield to take on Romulus of the Midland League Premier Division in an FA Cup extra preliminary round tie a week tomorrow (Saturday 5 August 3pm kick off).

It’s been a bit of a mixed bag with our pre-season games. Naturally the matches are more about fitness and getting games in the legs than they are about results, but of course it’s ideal to get both!

So, it was great for Patryk Mazurkiewicz and Lewis Holdham to score hat-tricks in an 8-1 blitzing of Northwich Victoria, just as it was a huge positive for our defence to pull off an impressive shut-out against league one Port Vale.

Manager Paul Moore said: “I’m really happy with where we’re at as a squad. I feel that we’ve recruited well, we look solid with our new backline and they’re gelling together well. We’ll also be extremely competitive in midfield.

Jonny Nixon’s ACL injury is going to keep him out for a long period and that’s a blow, I can’t dress that up any other way, but we’ve got good depth in many positions now.

“We’ll train Tuesday and Thursday ahead of the cup game opener and we’re all really looking forward to a competitive opening fixture. I’m expecting a tough game at Romulus, but we’ll be ready for the challenge.”

If we come through the tie with Romulus, we will be away to either Rugby or Malvern in the first qualifying round.
