Reserves through on spot kicks in Presidents Cup
Newcastle Reserves 0-0 Foley 433
(Castle win 5-3 on penalties)
Our reserves team had a terrific win on penalties against Foley 433 in the last 16 of the Presidents Cup last night coping with windy conditions and good quality opposition to advance to the quarter-finals.
Despite missing a golden opportunity to win the game in normal time when Patryk Mazurkiewicz smashed a spot kick against the cross bar in the 88th minute, the lads recovered their poise to convert all five of their spot kicks in the shoot-out and take their place in the last eight.
Speaking to Gibbsy after the match, gaffer Dave Dale was full of praise for his team.
“I thought we did really well particularly after they had dominated the first 20 minutes. Once we got to grips with them, I thought we were the better team, particularly in the second half when we could have won the game outright.
“Make no mistake, Foley 433 were very tough opposition. They train every day and it showed at times. But I can only offer full credit to the lads for weathering the storm early on and getting a grip in the game. And as for the shoot-out penalties – well they were faultless.”
