Match Preview - Scunthorpe United vs Newcastle Town

We’re off to Glanford Park!

After the thrilling 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe at the weekend, and after what feels like a very short turnaround, we’re off to Lincolnshire for the replay tomorrow.

Nobody gave us much of a chance on Saturday to beateffectively the top ranked team playing in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup, and it’s likely that virtually no-one will give us much of one tomorrow either. But that suits us just fine.

Having come through ties with Evesham United and Westfields after replays and then edging passed Long Eaton at the end of August, this will be our seventh FA Cup tie of the season. Without any semblance of doubt, it will also be our toughest.

But as we did when we put on a terrific show on Saturday – a display characterised by footballing excellence in the first half and sheer bloody-mindedness in the second – we are not travelling northeast to make up the numbers.

We’ll go there with a game plan and that will be not simply be to soak up the pressure and hope for the best. As our experienced manager Neil Baker has shown throughout his career and, continuing through the eight and a half months we’ve been lucky enough to have him in our dug out, his sleeves are rarely free of tricks.

Tomorrow will be a fantastic experience for our players and Neil will be keen to remind them what it is that has got them this far – a fair bit of brilliance and a lot of resilience. Whether that is enough to get us a win tomorrow night and earn a trip to Leeds to play Guiseley in the next round remains to be seen, but whatever happens – what a terrific cup run it has been.

Good luck lads – we’re all very proud of you.

Come on Castle!
