Castle on the road to City of Liverpool
Seven points from a possible nine is a very impressive return from the first three games in the Neil Baker reign but the going doesn’t get any less tough in our next run of fixtures.
Tomorrow, we take on the City of Liverpool. Although not having won in their last three games, ‘the purps’ as they like to be called – a reference to their all-purple home colours – are a very fine side and one that our gaffer referred to as being ‘the second-best team in the league’.
But if ever there is a time for us to be playing the best sides in the league, then off the back of beating another team in that bracket as we did with our 1-0 win over Runcorn on Saturday, probably isn’t a bad time.
We came through the Runcorn game relatively unscathed. There were a couple of knocks that will need to be assessed and with the weather conditions expected to be tough with another night of freezing temperatures ahead, risks won’t be taken.
Ahead of the game Neil was quick to pay respect to our opponents tomorrow. He said: “They’re a very good footballing side, a team that likes to play out from the back and as the home side will look to dominate possession.
“I think they are the second-best team in the league and I’m almost certain they will end up in the play-offs. They’ve had a terrific run in the FA Trophy and have games in hand, so they’ll be a tough challenge for us. Having said all that, we’re going there in great shape after our recent results and will be ready to give them a game.”
With another tough game to come at Avro on Saturday, this week is a big test. However, the signs since the turn of the year are very positive and there’s no reason to think we can’t continue this hugely improved run.
Providing that the weather allows, we’ll head to Liverpool tomorrow in confident mood and hope to extend our three-match unbeaten run.
Come on Castle!
