Fantastic draw for Castle as former league giants Scunthorpe come to town
After numerous away draws over the last couple of seasons in the FA Cup and FA Trophy, the kindly folks with the velvet bags have given us a terrific draw in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.
In a draw which will please absolutely everyone connected with the club, we have been drawn with…yes Scunthorpe United.
Club chairman Gavin Appleby was thrilled with thedraw, “It’s a massive opportunity for us playing at home against a former league club. They are flying in their division this season and I hope they bring a big following with them because at the end of the day that’s what really makes these occasions.
“With any luck we might also get the TV cameras down, as if you ever could look at a game as being a case of David v Goliath, this would be it.
“We’ll be making Scunthorpe very welcome at our ground and I’m sure that the players will be relishing the challenge against one of the biggest non-league clubs in the country. Bring it on!”
Our captain Tommy van der Laan is equally looking forward to the game. “I’m absolutely buzzing for this already and the draw’s only just been made! We tend to raise our game against the stronger teams, so I think this is a great opportunity for us.
“These games come around once in a blue moon, so we’ll be really well prepared and wanting to put on a great show for our fans and showcase Newcastle as a town. I can’t wait!”
Scunthorpe United are riding high at the top of the National League North having won five and drawn one of their opening six league games and conceding only one goal in the process.
It’s an unbelievably tough ask for us to beat such an illustrious opponent, but this is the FA Cup folks and you never say never.
The fixture will take place on the weekend of the 14th September 2024. Exact date and kick-off time TBC.
Come on ‘Castle!
